About Da Hong Pao
“Da Hong Pao” literally means “big red robe” in Chinese. Despite the name, it is not a red tea but a type of oolong tea known as rock tea. Legend has it that a scholar once fell ill on his way to the imperial exams. The abbot of a nearby Wuyi Mountain temple used tea as medicine to heal him. When the scholar later succeeded and became a top-ranking scholar, he draped red robes over the tea trees to show his gratitude. This is why Da Hong Pao is also affectionately called “the Scholar’s Tea.”

The Wuyi Mountains are covered with rocky terrain, which gives this tea its unique “rock charm.” This terroir imparts a rich aroma, clean and full-bodied taste, and a quick, pleasant aftertaste. On the market, Da Hong Pao is divided into “Zheng Yan” (authentic rock) and “Ban Yan” (semi-rock) varieties, with Zheng Yan offering the purest expression of Wuyi rock tea.
