Ru Kiln Gongfu Tea Set
This is a complete set of Gongfu tea essentials. Whether you’re drinking alone or hosting friends, it’s perfectly suited for brewing tea.
What is Ru Kiln?
China’s Five Great Kilns refer to the most representative porcelain kilns of the Song dynasty, which marked the peak of ancient Chinese ceramic craftsmanship. These five kilns are:
-
Ru Kiln (Ru Ware)
-
Guan Kiln
-
Ge Kiln
-
Ding Kiln
-
Jun Kiln
Ru Kiln is considered the rarest and most precious among the five. Renowned for its signature “sky-blue” glaze, Ru porcelain resembles clouds drifting across a clear sky. Its surface is smooth and delicate, with a soft, jade-like luster and unique crack patterns.
Because of its extreme rarity—very few original pieces survive—Ru Kiln porcelain is celebrated as the “Empress of Porcelain.”

This is the so-called Craquelure (Kai Pian 开片)
A truly unique feature of Ru Kiln porcelain.
What is Craquelure?
Formation of Ru Kiln Craquelure
-
Firing process: The fine crack patterns on Ru ware are a natural phenomenon that occurs during firing. Because Ru porcelain uses a thick glaze, the glaze and the clay body contract at different rates under high temperatures, creating delicate, frost-like cracks.
-
Crack features: The craquelure of Ru porcelain is typically fine, even, and natural. The irregular distribution creates a distinctive artistic effect. No two pieces are ever alike—this uniqueness is part of Ru porcelain’s enduring charm.
-
“Ice-crack” effect: Known as binglie (ice cracks), the patterns resemble frozen ice or jade. This visual quality gives Ru ware a sense of natural elegance and ancient simplicity.
The Art and Value of Craquelure
-
Artistic appeal: The fine crack lines make Ru porcelain appear as if it has weathered a thousand years of history. They are both decorative and expressive, adding depth, character, and timeless beauty. This makes Ru ware highly prized among collectors and art lovers.
-
Value: Craquelure is not a flaw but a hallmark of authenticity and artistry. Because it forms naturally and unpredictably, pieces with this effect are especially rare and valuable. Not every Ru kiln piece develops it—making those that do treasures in their own right.
