Fenghuang Dancong Oolong Tea
Semi-Oxidized Oolong from Fenghuang Mountain, China
Fenghuang Dancong is a traditional Chinese oolong tea from Fenghuang Mountain in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong, southern China. It is well known for its expressive aroma and is often described as one of the most fragrant styles of oolong tea.
The history of Fenghuang Dancong dates back over a thousand years. According to historical records and local tradition, an early tea tree variety was discovered on Fenghuang Mountain with leaves shaped like a bird’s beak. Through centuries of natural evolution and selective cultivation, this lineage developed into what is now known as the Fenghuang Shuixian population cultivar. Some tea scholars even consider this region one of the earliest birthplaces of oolong tea.
Originally, Fenghuang Dancong was produced using a single-tree, single-batch method—each tea tree was harvested and processed separately. This is where the name Dancong (“single bush”) comes from. Large-scale population planting only began in the late 1980s.
Altitude plays a major role in quality:
-
Below 300 meters: higher yield, lighter and simpler flavor
-
300–600 meters: improved body and aroma
-
Above 600 meters: stronger aroma, deeper flavor, longer finish
This tea is sourced from tea gardens above 600 meters on Fenghuang Mountain, offering a clear high-mountain character with more intensity and structure compared to lower-altitude Dancong teas.
