What is Red Tea?
In China, this tea is called “Hong Cha” (Red Tea) because we name teas after the color of the brewed liquor. The bright golden-red infusion is the essence of this category.
In the West, however, it became known as Black Tea. Why?
Because the first teas exported to Europe centuries ago were smoked Wuyishan red teas (known as Lapsang Souchong). Their dark, almost black dried leaves gave rise to the Western name.
So when you see Red Tea here, know that it refers to the same family of teas Westerners often call Black Tea—but with the true Chinese perspective.
Origin & Craft
Jin Jun Mei was first created in 2005 in Tongmuguan Village, Wuyishan—the cradle of the world’s red tea. It is crafted exclusively from tender spring buds, using a unique small-frame off-ground fermentation process.
