The Story of Duanjia Jade

In the turbulent years of the Republic of China, a jade merchant named Duan Shengcai uncovered a single, breathtaking boulder of jadeite. Its beauty defied convention: icy translucency, lively floating inclusions resembling aquatic plants, and an inner glow that moved like water under moonlight.

When war broke out, foreign forces sought to seize this jade. To protect it, Duan submerged the stone into a pond overgrown with real water plants. The stone vanished into its surroundings—camouflaged by nature itself. The invaders never found it.

After the war, the jade was recovered, revered, and named “Duanjia Jade”, in honor of its discoverer. Over 400 pairs of bangles were carved from that single boulder. The finest pair, it is said, was collected by Madame Soong Mei-ling, First Lady of the Republic of China. The rest have since scattered across the world.

No comparable jadeite with the same visual and material characteristics has ever been found again.
