Jingmai Mountain “Crab’s Foot”

Wild Ancient Tea Tree Parasitic Plant

This is “Crab’s Foot” from the ancient tea forests of Jingmai Mountain — a UNESCO World Heritage tea mountain in Yunnan, China.

UNESCO – Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in Pu’er

“Crab’s Foot” is a rare parasitic plant that naturally grows attached to other plants.

The highest-quality Crab’s Foot grows only on ancient tea trees deep inside original forests, and some of the most prized examples come from the famous:

Dapingzhang Tea Region

within Jingmai Mountain.

Completely Wild Growth

Unlike cultivated tea plants, Crab’s Foot is entirely wild.

It cannot be farmed in the traditional sense and requires a very strict natural environment to survive.

Because of this, production is extremely limited.

Most of the time, tea farmers only discover it accidentally while harvesting ancient tea trees in the mountains.

After discovery, it must be carefully hand-harvested separately.

How to Brew

Crab’s Foot can be brewed alone:

• 1–2 grams
• brewed gongfu style
• multiple infusions possible

When brewed by itself, it produces a clean, herbal, mountain-like sweetness with a refreshing texture.

Best Used Together with Tea

However, the most popular way to enjoy Crab’s Foot is together with tea.

It pairs especially well with:

• Raw Pu’er tea
• White tea
• Red tea
• Ancient tree teas

Only a small amount is needed.

If too much is added, it can overpower the original tea flavor.

Used correctly, it can greatly enhance:

• sweetness
• cooling sensation
• mouthfeel
• salivation
• aftertaste

Many tea drinkers use it almost like a natural flavor enhancer for gongfu tea.

A Rare Tea Table Ingredient

Because it grows only in highly preserved ancient forest environments, and because harvesting depends almost entirely on chance discovery during tea season, truly good Crab’s Foot remains very rare.

For tea drinkers who already enjoy traditional gongfu tea, this is one of the most interesting ways to experience an additional layer of mountain character inside the tea session.
